Digital voice assistant: CARIAD acquires AI specialist paragon semvox

With the planned acquisition, CARIAD strengthens its expertise in the development of digital voice assistants based on artificial intelligence.

CARIAD, the software company of the Volkswagen Group, plans to acquire AI specialist paragon semvox and today signed the corresponding purchase agreement with automotive supplier paragon. With the acquisition, CARIAD is strengthening its competencies in the field of digital voice assistants based on artificial intelligence. CARIAD is already working on a digital assistant that will offer Volkswagen Group customers a personalized and attractive digital experience in the car. The closing of the transaction is still subject to various conditions, in particular the reservation of antitrust approvals, and is expected in spring 2023.

„The car of the future will be automated and connected. The digital experience inside the car is therefore becoming increasingly important,“ says Lynn Longo, Chief Technical Officer at CARIAD. „In the future, an intelligently interacting voice assistant will be the central touchpoint for the Group brands to their customers and will play a major role in the user experience. paragon semvox is a proven specialist in voice technology. With the planned acquisition, we are therefore systematically expanding our internal expertise. After all, we want to develop key technologies ourselves that differentiate the Group brands from the competition. The digital customer experience is one of our strategic priorities.“

„With today’s signing of the purchase agreement regarding our software subsidiary semvox, paragon is focusing on solutions in the field of automotive electronics, body kinematics and electromobility, as planned, following the sale of its stake in Voltabox AG last year,“ said Klaus Dieter Frers, Founder and CEO of paragon GmbH & Co. KGaA, explaining the strategic reasons. „

In addition, we are sustainably strengthening paragon’s financial power with the proceeds from the sale.“ CARIAD and paragon agreed on a purchase price in the mid double-digit million range.

paragon semvox offers AI-based solutions for voice control and human-machine interaction and has been supplying the Volkswagen Group as its main customer for years. Automated driving: CARIAD acquires automotive division of sensor data

CARIAD acquires the automotive division of Intenta GmbH, where more than 100 experts work in the field of sensor data fusion.

On the road to automated driving: CARIAD acquires the automotive division of Intenta GmbH, where more than 100 experts work in the field of sensor data fusion. With this know-how, the Volkswagen Group’s software company is increasing its depth of value added and, at the same time, accelerating the development of assisted and automated driving functions. CARIAD is developing these up to Level 4 for all of the Group’s car brands. Completion of the acquisition is expected towards the end of 2022 and is still subject to approval by the antitrust authorities.

„Our goal is to develop key software components ourselves and increase the depth of value added in key development areas,“ says Lynn Longo, Chief Technical Officer at CARIAD. „That’s why we are expanding our expertise along the entire tech stack for automated driving. One building block here is sensor data fusion. With the acquisition of Intenta’s automotive unit as a proven specialist in this field, we are expanding our competencies.“

    Connected Car Data

The fusion of the various data coming into the car – whether from the lidar and radar sensors, cameras, navigation or in-cabin monitoring with occupant observation – plays an important role for automated driving functions. Merging and overlaying all this data creates an accurate and consistent image of the environment. This enables the vehicle to recognize objects in its environment, interpret their movements, and therefore move safely and automatically in its surroundings. Sensor data fusion is therefore an important prerequisite for the high safety requirements of assisted and automated driving, where drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel and use the time for other activities. In addition, Intenta’s automotive developers have expertise in the development of swarm services and display functions.

CARIAD already made an acquisition in the development field of automated driving last year and took over the camera software division of Hella Aglaia. The acquisition of Intenta’s automotive unit is now the next logical step. CARIAD is pursuing the goal of massively increasing its vertical value creation in software and hardware development in the coming years through the recruiting of experts, acquisitions and strategic partnerships. In this way, the company intends to retain control over and help shape the customer experience in software-controlled cars in the future. By the middle of the decade, the company intends to develop a large part of the software in strategic areas of software and hardware architecture, the operating system, the cloud, automated driving and infotainment in-house.

Volkswagen Group’s Car.Software Organisation and Microsoft will build an Automated Driving PlatformVolkswagen Group’s CARIAD Organisation and Microsoft will build an Automated Driving Platform

„This is the next evolution of our foundational work with the Volkswagen Group to enhance their transformation as a software-driven mobility provider,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president, Cloud + AI at Microsoft. “The power of Microsoft Azure and its compute, data and AI capabilities will enable Volkswagen to deliver secure and reliable automated driving solutions to their customers faster.“

Build AD and ADAS solutions faster with one development platform

ADAS and automated driving vehicles can help improve passenger safety while reducing congestion and making mobility even more comfortable. Building these solutions requires large-scale computational capabilities. Petabytes of data from road and weather conditions to obstacle detection and driver behavior need to be managed every day for the training, simulation and validation of AD functions. Machine learning algorithms that learn from billions of real and simulated miles driven are key to connected driving experiences.

CARIAD will address these challenges together with Microsoft by simplifying the developer experience and leveraging the „learnings from miles driven“ through one database comprising real traffic data from the Group’s vehicles as well as simulation data. Microsoft Azure compute, data and machine learning services as well as Microsoft’s know-how in agile software development will enable one development environment for CARIAD developers globally. ADP will help reduce the development cycles from months to weeks and efficiently manage the huge amount of data. The companies will start working on ADP immediately and are looking to continuously expand the functional scope of the development platform.

Both companies intend to enable technology partners to build tools and services that integrate with the platform to enhance the creation of AD and ADAS solutions.

Volkswagen Group increases in-house development of software in the car

The Volkswagen Group is driving forward the digitalization of the car rapidly. By 2025, the Group will invest around EUR 27 billion in digitalization and increase the proportion of in-house development of software in the car to 60 percent from 10 percent today. Founded last year, the CARIAD plays a key role in the transformation of the Volkswagen Group towards a software-driven mobility provider. It bundles and continuously expands the Group’s software competencies, including the development of high-performance driving functions for passenger cars that will be integrated into future models of Volkswagen Group’s brands.

Deploy and operate ADAS and AD solutions with Volkswagen Automotive Cloud

Since 2018, Volkswagen and Microsoft have been collaborating on the Volkswagen Automotive Cloud (VW.AC), which is focused on integrating all the digital services and mobility offerings across the Group brands and models in the future. VW.AC’s engineering team, based in Seattle, has enabled data to be exchanged between the vehicles and the cloud through Azure edge services. The cloud connectivity is also enabling Volkswagen to deliver vehicle updates and new features independently of the vehicle hardware to continuously improve the customer experience.

The first VW.AC connected test fleets are expected to hit the road in 2021. Production rollout is planned for 2022. CARIAD will integrate ADP and VW.AC as the company moves toward further integrating their software solutions, tools and methods to empower its engineering teams, customers, and partners globally. With VW.AC, the AD and ADAS functions developed on top of ADP can be tested, deployed and operated across the Group’s vehicle fleet.
